As a corporate professional, you’re familiar with balancing your work schedule and managing your time throughout the day. However, doing so while also earning your EMBA degree adds more responsibility to your plate. 

That’s why at Kent State, we’ve given our students the chance to earn an EMBA through our program that accommodates corporate work life through our online courses and meetings that take place just one Saturday a month. 

Even with our conveniences, we recognize that it may be tough to balance your professional career while earning your professional degree. With that in mind, here are some work-life balance tips that we believe will continue to put you on the path to success:

Determine Your Priorities

Taking on a weekend EMBA program while maintaining a full-time career means making certain tasks a priority and deciding what is most important to you. Making the commitment to add more to your schedule will not be an easy decision. Therefore, you must prioritize your to-do list to decide what is most important and what must be done first. 

Luckily, our faculty is here every step of the way to give support and concrete tips on determining your priorities and having an efficient work-life balance. 

Once you have made your profession and your education two priorities in your life, it will take some organization to balance them with ease.


Balancing work and life can sometimes seem like a daunting task. Getting organized is a sure way to help manage your growing to-do list in a painless manner. Here are some of our suggestions for buckling down and getting organized: 

  • Write Things Down

According to The Association for Psychological Science, writing things down boosts your memory and increases your ability to retain and understand concepts. 

Physically writing down notes in a meeting or during a course can help increase your chances of remembering that content later on. Write checklists for the things you have to do for your work and courses. They’ll keep you on track for everything you have to get done, and you can feel good checking that item off your to-do list later.

  • Use a Planner

Take the idea of writing things down a step further by investing in a planner. Planners will allow you to plan out your week or month in an organized calendar. Visually seeing the things you have to do – whether they relate to work, your degree, or anything else – will make them all easier to remember and accomplish.

  • Establish and Organize Your Workspace

At your corporate job, you’re probably situated into your work space already. But are you using that space to your advantage? When your desk or office becomes messy, the clutter can cause unwelcomed distraction and/or stress. Tidying up your workspace will allow for more efficient work to be done. 

With our online EMBA courses, you can work from anywhere. Whether you choose to complete our courses at your desk, at home, or at a coffee shop, make sure you’re choosing a place that is clean and quiet. This will allow you to get in the zone and complete your coursework – no matter where you are.

Time Management

Time management is something that must be established to achieve a proper work-life balance. Enrolling in a weekend EMBA program while working full-time means you must combine two different schedules and make them coincide. Here are two ways to do so while managing your time properly: 

  • Block Off Time

Depending on how busy your schedule is, you may sometimes have to block off some extra time to complete a course assignment or work project. Buckling down and giving yourself that time to completely dedicate yourself to that task and nothing else guarantees you a chance at full productivity. 

This means putting away any other materials, turning off your phone and not going on social media until you’re done.

  • Give Yourself a Break  

On the flip side, if you find yourself stressing out because of how busy you’ve been, block off some time to take a break. It can be as little as walking around the office for a couple minutes or as big as getting lunch with a friend. 

Blocking out time for social activity and getting your mind off your busy schedule will de-stress you and motivate you to get your tasks done.

Take Some Time for Yourself

Speaking of taking breaks, another method of balancing work and life would be to take some time for yourself. Once you’ve completed the tasks you need to do for the day, make sure to relax and unwind. 

Rewarding yourself will help you end the day on a positive note and recharge you for the next morning. Take advantage of any free time you may have and use it to do something you enjoy. Doing so will make you happier and give you the motivation you need to continue forward.

Ask for Support

Balancing the tasks of a full-time, corporate job and the coursework of our online EMBA program may be stressful at times. But there is something everybody here at Kent State highly recommends students to do: ask for help. 

Seeking out help from those around you - whether it’s family, friends or coworkers - is one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself. It can help you get some tasks off your shoulders or it can be as simple as getting emotional support from those who care about you.
