Line Following Robot Competition Banner

This is designed to be a fun competition with many prizes.

Grade school, middle school, high school, university students, faculty and staff are invited to compete.

To compete, register by March 6, 2020

  1. Field
    • 4’x8’ Smooth White Hardboard Wall Panel
    • Line will be ¾” wide black electrical tape 
    • Minimum curve radius = 15 cm (measured to inside edge of tape)
    • Minimum distance between lines (measured from closest edges of tape) = 15 cm
    • Minimum distance from edge of field (measure from outside edge of tape) = 15 cm
    • No crossovers
    • Track will be a closed-loop
  2. Race
    • Race will be against the clock
    • Timing will either be by a mechanism or with a stopwatch
    • Three laps
    • Shortest total time wins
    • Each team will have three tries. Time will be the shortest of the three tries
    • Order will be by lot
    • Maximum time to complete course is three minutes
    • Maximum 1-minute calibration period immediately prior to race
    • Robots must not leave the line or shortcut
      • Judge will determine if robot leaves the line
      • Robot will be considered to follow the line if the robot’s body sweeps over the entire length of the line
      • If a robot loses the line it must reacquire it either at a previous location or within 10 cm of where the line was lost – i.e. the robot’s body should not miss more than 10 cm of line. A judge will determine this.
      • If robot leaves the line that try is over
  3. Robots
    • Maximum size is 25 cm x 25 cm x 25 cm at any time during the race
    • Robots must be able to pass through the timing gate which will be centered on the line and have an opening 30 cm wide x 30 cm high
    • Maximum mass is 1 kg
    • Swarm bots or other multiple robots are NOT permitted
    • No kits
    • Robot must be autonomous
      • Robot may communicate status information but must not receive any communication or feedback from external entities
      • Autonomous period starts when robot first crosses the start/finish line and ends when the robot completely crosses the start/finish line the fourth time (3 laps)
        • This means that the calibration does not need to be autonomous
        • Remote start, prior to the robot crossing the start line, and remote stop, after the robot crosses the finish line, is allowed
    • Robot must not damage or alter the field
    • Robots may be deemed unsafe and subject to disqualification by judges before starting or during the event
