The Good News Movement: A Tip of a Lifetime
This good news is shared through the voice of Tyler Weiss, a Junior Professional Pilot student, and President of Alpha Eta Rho.
We tagged this fundraiser "The Tip of a Lifetime" with the goal of spreading kindness in a world that so desperately needs it right now. My roommates and I first met Trudi at Outback Steakhouse in Cuyahoga Falls about a month ago, and it's an understatement to say that she's the best waitress we've ever had. We returned a few days later to have Trudi again, and she immediately recognized us and treated us as though she'd known us forever! At the end of our meal that day, she brought over a container of cookies that she had baked the night before at home. She truly goes above and beyond in her job and that, to me, is what makes her stand out as an incredible person.
After learning that she works at the restaurant six days a week, we thought it would be nice to raise some money for a nice tip for her, and originally we didn't believe that many people would donate. I first spread the story to my family and friends at home and then introduced the idea to Alpha Eta Rho as a service project. I felt it would be great to get this organization involved to both help raise more money and give our members an opportunity to spread some kindness. I originally set the goal at $1000 to just throw a number out there, not necessarily expecting to get $1000. Within 24 hours of posting, we hit $600. I was absolutely floored! Needless to say, we eventually surpassed our goal, raising approximately $1200 total for Trudi. Money was collected through a Go Fund Me, Venmo, and some donors used cash.
Her reaction was priceless, and she really appreciated what we did for her. When the camera wasn't rolling, she said things that brought tears to my eyes. She said, "I read about stuff like this all the time, but it's not supposed to happen to me. I'm a giver!" To me, that shows just how deserving she is, and we were so happy to be able to help her out! My hope is that this inspires others to pay it forward and spread kindness in the community.
A True Demonstration of the CAE Core Values
Tyler and his peers show true excellence in this story. Leading with a heart of compassion and exemplifying integrity, these students took it upon themselves to show kindness to a person they had just met - but felt like they had known forever. Their out-of-the-box thinking and collaboration with one another led to an outcome of innovation by using mainstream media tools to share this story and ask for partnership from the larger community to raise this donation. They were able to persevere past their goal of $1,000. This group of students has certainly earned the respect of each other, our community, and certainly Trudi.
