Communication Studies Professors Earn Faculty Recognition Award

Assistant Professor Joelle Cruz, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Mei-Chen Lin, Ph.D., of the School of Communications Studies at Kent State University will each receive the Faculty Recognition Award at Friday’s University Teaching Council (UTC) Conference.

This award is given to faculty members who were nominated by their students for making a marked difference in their lives while at Kent State.

Cruz says she gets to know her students personally, going “beyond course content and classroom assignments, I find that genuinely being interested and caring for students makes a difference.”

Lin was very surprised to be recognized.

“Somehow, something in a class clicked with the students,” Lin said.

Lin teaches courses such as communication and aging, intercultural communication and interpersonal communication.

“If (my students) remember something from the class 20 years from now; then I have done my job,” Lin said.

The recipients will be recognized during the President’s Luncheon at the UTC Conference on Oct. 23.
