I'm with Her
Hana Barkowitz, a junior public relations major in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Kent State University, has been appointed the national director of communications for the state federations of the College Democrats of America, the official student arm of the Democratic National Committee with more than 600 campus chapters nationwide.
Tasked with the management of all internal and external communication, Barkowitz will be responsible for building good relationships with members of the press and developing content and messaging for old, new and emerging media. The "I will vote" message is one such campaign.
“I’ll be working with the state federations to make sure they are working with their chapters so there’s effective and consistent communication among the chapters and states,” Barkowitz said.
Barkowitz is familiar with political campaigns having worked on multiple, including as an organizing fellow for Obama For America in 2012 and Bill de Blasio’s New York City mayoral campaign in 2013.
Now, as the current president of the Kent State College Democrats, Barkowitz said she feels well prepared to take on her new national level position due to her past experiences and public relations courses.
“What I’ve learned in my PR classes and by working in the College of Communication and Information marketing office will help tremendously,” she said. “I’m learning media relations, branding and event planning, which is exactly what this position entails. Hopefully, I’ll be able to help chapters around the United States just like I have helped the Kent State chapter to better organize itself and to more effectively prioritize its goals and activities.”
