School of Library and Information Science Professor Tapped to Serve as Interim Director of School of Visual Communication Design
College of Communication and Information (CCI) Dean Amy Reynolds, Ph.D., named Associate Professor David Robins, Ph.D., as interim director of the School of Visual Communication Design (VCD) for the 2016-17 academic year. Robins currently serves as the concentration coordinator of the User Experience Design (UXD) program in the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS).
Robins holds a doctorate in information science from the University of North Texas. His research focuses on information architecture, visual explanations of complex constructs and user interaction with information systems. Much of his published work concerns users' interaction with information seeking structures. He has developed courses in information technologies, information architecture and knowledge management which integrate theory with real world application.
This summer, leading up to his transition into the interim director’s role, Robins will work with colleagues CCI Paul Sherman, Ph.D., (SLIS/UXD) and Gretchen Rinnert (VCD) to develop an undergraduate minor in UXD that will serve all Kent State students and should be of particular interest to many CCI students. Their proposal will come before the appropriate school and CCI curriculum committees at the start of the fall semester, according to Reynolds.
"Dave is a collaborative, thoughtful and innovative colleague, and I know he will serve VCD and the CCI leadership team well during the upcoming year," Reynolds said. "Another collaborative, thoughtful and innovative colleague with whom I have had the privilege to work this past year is Jaime Kennedy, the current interim director for VCD. Jaime has provided important leadership for VCD — I have appreciated his vision, enthusiasm, creativity and collegiality as part of the CCI leadership team. Jaime has decided to take his well-earned FPIL (Spring 2017) as we search for a permanent VCD director next year.
I thank both Dave and Jaime for their willingness to serve VCD and CCI — we are fortunate to have these two terrific and talented faculty leaders as colleagues!"
