Salem, Ohio – Kent State University at Salem will observe Earth Week with a full slate of activities, demonstrations and presentations on Thursday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Horticulture Club, working with Associate Professor of Horticulture Chris Carlson, planned the day-long event with sessions to interest everyone from the do-it-yourself homeowner to the horticultural professional, and all ages.
Highlights of the day will include two tree planting and dedication ceremonies on the campus, with the first at noon and the second at 5 p.m. Lola Lewis from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will be on campus that day to answer questions related to urban forestry assistance for communities.
There will also be a twig identification table, providing attendees the chance to identify and smell all the unique and unusual scents of local trees. The Ohio Department of Agriculture will provide free fact sheets and information handouts about threatening landscape pests.
The day’s schedule includes:
- 9-11:30 a.m. – Tree Preservation: Cabling and Bracing Techniques, presented by the Kent State arboriculture class.
- 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Arborist Climbing and Rigging demonstration by Carlson and Kurt Magnello.
- Noon – Tree planting and dedication with the Horticulture Club and Carlson.
- 1:30-2:30 p.m. – Hazardous tree detection demonstration using resistographs and increment borers, presented by Carlson and Jonathan Malish.
- 2:30-3 p.m. – Soil compaction relief demonstration using a high-tech air spade, presented by Magnello and the Horticulture Club.
- 5 p.m. – Tree planting and dedication with the Horticulture Club and Carlson
- 7 p.m. – Lecture by Carlson focusing on proper and improper planting and mulching techniques. This will take place in Lecture Room 134.
- 8 p.m. – Showing of the award winning animated short film, “The Man Who Planted Trees,” in the Lecture Hall. This film is rated the fourth greatest short film of all time and is appropriate for all ages, so kids are welcome.
- 8:45 p.m. – Question and answer session with Carlson, associate professor of horticulture technology and expert arborist. Anyone with questions related to trees, shrubs and landscape should plan to attend.
