Communication Studies Scholarships

The School of Communication Studies is accepting applications for undergraduate and graduate scholarships to be awarded for the 2018-2019 school year.

To apply for one of the COMM scholarships, visit https://scholarships.comm.kent.edu. Students must log in using their FlashLine credentials to complete the scholarship application. All online applications are due by Friday, March 2, 2018

Scholarship Application for Current Students: The application is closed for 2018

Before submitting the application and uploading supporting documentation, students should review the individual eligibility criteria. All scholarships must include:

  • Completed application form;
  • GPA as of the previous semester; and
  • Two (2) names faculty members who can serve as references, if necessary.

All scholarship recipients must complete a Student Online Donor Acknowledgment Form before the funds will be released to their bursar's account. 

A committee of faculty members and others appointed by the school director will choose the award winners each year. Recipients will be recognized at the school's Scholarships & Awards Reception on Friday, April 20, 2018


All applicants must be communication studies majors. If a specific concentration is part of the scholarship criteria, it will be listed below.  

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR UNDERGRADUATES

Arnold And Dorothy Danes Book Scholarship
•    Award amount: $200 
•    Required concentration: global communication
•    Other criteria: Student must be an undergraduate who has demonstrated academic excellence and an interest in being a citizen of the world through knowledge and action.
Michael Dubetz Endowed Scholarship
•    Award amount: $500
•    Minimum GPA: 3.0 
•    Other criteria: Student must be a junior exhibiting strong leadership and personal achievement. 
The Feezel Family Scholarship for Global Students
•    Award amount: Two (2) at $1,000 each 
•    Minimum GPA: 2.5 
•    Required concentration: Statement about interest in intercultural communication
•    Other criteria: Students must be juniors or seniors participating in a Kent State University sponsored study aboard program with a demonstrated financial need based on the FASFA financial aid form. Transcript required.
Garmon-Murvay Scholarship
•    Award amount: $500 
•    Minimum GPA: 3.0 
•    Other criteria: Student must be a junior with at least one year left to complete with demonstrated academic performance, motivation, character, ability and potential.
Nancy E. Mitchell Endowed Scholarship
•    Award amount: $1,000 
•    Minimum GPA: 3.0 cumulative; 3.25 GPA in communication studies
•    Other criteria: Student must be a junior with a sustained record of academic excellence; consistent record of community service; and effective leadership.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATES AND/OR UNDERGRADUATES

Rebecca & Alan Rubin Endowed Scholarship
•    Award amount: $2,500
•    Other criteria: Student in the undergraduate and graduate programs are eligible, as are Ph.D. students with a communication studies focus. Student must show strong academic performance, motivation, character, ability and potential; and have at least one year left to complete.
School of Communication Memorial Scholarship
•    Award amount: Two (2) at $1,500 each
•    Other criteria: Preference will be given to graduate or undergraduate students with 90 credit hours or less who are enrolled in a CCI-sponsored or supported study aboard program.
School of Communication Studies Scholarship
•    Award amount: Two (2) at $2,000 each
•    Other criteria: Preference will be given to graduate or undergraduate students who are enrolled in a CCI-sponsored or supported study aboard program to support achievement and recognition.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATES AND/OR UNDERGRADUATES

Dr. D. Ray and Susanne E. Heisey Endowed International Scholarship Fund
•    Award amount: $2,000
•    Minimum GPA: 3.2 
•    Other criteria: International student must have come directly from his/her native country to be a master’s student and have demonstrated educational and professional goals; motivation; initiative; and a financial need.

Dr. Dominic A. Infante Communication Scholarship
•    Award amount: $2,000
•    Minimum GPA: 3.2 
•    Other criteria: Student must be entering the second year of the Master of Arts program who is on schedule for completing the master’s degree. Preference will be granted to a student who is judged by the graduate faculty to be a good prospect for matriculating into the Ph.D. program. 


OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS OPEN TO COMM STUDENTS

Below are other opportunities for COMM students, but they are not administered by the School of Communication Studies and are not part of the COMM application process. Check back for links to application instructions. 

•    AAF-Cleveland. AAF-Cleveland awards scholarships to junior and senior students studying communications, marketing, advertising, graphic design, digital media, public relations, journalism and more. 


•    AAF-Akron. AAF-Akron awards scholarships to junior and senior students studying communications, marketing, advertising, graphic design, digital media, public relations, journalism and more. Application deadline is January 19. 


•    Ohio Newspaper Foundation Scholarships. Deadline is March 31, 2018, for scholarships for journalism, advertising, marketing and communication students.


•    Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Scholarship. Awarded to sophomores and juniors enrolled in a major related to broadcasting, journalism, media, communication, advertising, etc., from Carroll, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage, Stark or Summit counties. Application deadline: March 11, 2018. 


•    College of Communication and Information (CCI) Study Away Scholarships. For CCI students taking a study abroad course.


•    The John S. Knight Scholarships. The John S. Knight Scholarships are awarded by the Akron Press Club and are open to all journalism students at Kent State University, Akron University, Hiram College and any local journalism student studying out of state. 


•    David A. Meeker Akron Area PRSA Scholarship. The Akron Area Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America awards one outstanding student the David A. Meeker Scholarship. The winner receives $1,000 and a one-year associate membership to PRSA following graduation. Also, two other winners are awarded one-year associate memberships to PRSA upon graduation. Applicants must be full-time students majoring in Public Relations or Communication and currently attending the University of Akron, Kent State University, Malone College, Mount Union, Walsh University or Youngstown State University.


•    YouToo Social Media Conference Scholarship. The Akron Area Public Relations Society of America awards a scholarship to a public relations major from funds raised by its annual YouToo Social Media Conference.


•    CCI Global First Passport Fund. Contact Stephanie Smith, Assistant Professor and Director of Global Initiatives for CCI, at ssmit149@kent.edu, to learn more about earning a scholarship to cover the cost of your first passport.
