Even if you’re not a bride-to-be, you might recognize the name Kleinfeld Bridal from the popular TLC show, “Say Yes to the Dress”. And, for one communication studies student, the New York City bridal boutique will become her place of employment in May.
Skyler Chill, a junior organizational communication major with minors in public communication, global communication and marketing, has always loved fashion. After hearing how much a friend enjoyed her internship at Kleinfeld Bridal, she decided to apply for a summer internship.
“I applied because I love New York City and I’m obsessed with everything bridal,” Chill said. “I want to have some sort of bridal or event planning business one day.”
Chill said thousands of people apply to be an intern at Kleinfeld Bridal while only a hundred are brought in for a face-to-face interview. Chill flew to NYC with her mother to complete the interview which lasted only 10 minutes. Earlier this week, she finally received the email she was hoping for – she got the internship.
“Oh, my gosh, I cried. I was so excited.” Chill said.
As an intern at Kleinfeld Bridal, Chill will have a number of responsibilities. She will serve as an assistant to the bridal consultant which means she will help meet with customers, get to know them, discuss their wedding day vision and then find their perfect dress. She will also have the opportunity to assist with sales, finance, inventory, production and the front desk.
She sees the skills she has learned in her communication studies classes as being essential in her internship.
“My classes will definitely help me,” she said. “With weddings, it is such a personal experience, I can use my communication skills to really understand what clients want. And, I won’t be scared to interact and talk with anyone.”
Chill said this will be her first internship. She recommends other students seeking an internship to apply to as many places as they can.
Her internship will last at Kleinfeld Bridal from May through August – so keep an eye out for her in the background of future “Say Yes to the Dress” episodes!
