November 27 to December 1, 2017

The College of Communication and Information (CCI) is hosting an event in the CCI Commons (Olson Hall Lounge) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28 to celebrate Giving Tuesday.

Stop by for free food, activities, crafts and a host of ways to “Give Big” thanks to alumni and friends.

What is #GivingTuesday? Entering its sixth year, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

Kent State participates in #GivingTuesday, as well. Check out its fundraising page online for ways to support programs across the university and in CCI. The college has two crowdfunding campaigns underway for the First Passport Fund and the Student Media Fund.

COMM will host its first Hyde Park Qualifying Tournament on Friday, Dec. 1. The preliminary rounds of competition begin at noon, followed by the finals at 1:30 p.m. in Rm. 226 Taylor Hall.

Full-time COMM faculty will judge each round, and the students who place first, second and third overall will move on to compete at the 2018 Hyde Park Forum in April.

The students competing in the Qualifying Tournament were selected using the following system: Instructors of Introduction to Human Communication (COMM 15000) sections submitted the videos of their students’ best persuasive speeches. Interim Basic Course Director Aaron Bacue and Assistant Basic Course Director Carrie Winters watched each video submission blindly (i.e., without knowing the instructor who submitted the video) and used a rating system. In the end, the following students were selected to compete:

  • Gina Butkovich (Instructor Sharon Storch)
  • Leah Caroothers (Instructor Kara Stouffer)
  • Victoria Clement (Instructor Kelsey Phillips)
  • Sydney Csizmadia (Instructor Sharon Storch)
  • Nina DelGreco (Instructor Dave McClellan)
  • Chloe Drake (Instructor Lynda Mwakisha)
  • Rachel Eldering (Instructor Oscar Ramos)
  • Jade Johnson (Instructor Jake Kucek)
  • Alexa Kwiatkowski (Instructor David Zachrich)
  • Mackenzie Matlack (Instructor Carrie Winters)
  • Javon Miller (Instructor Pam Harr)
  • Ashley Slivinske (Instructor Sharon Storch)
  • Rick Szalay (Instructor Sharon Storch)
  • Faith Taylor (Instructor Jake Kucek)
  • Annie Thiese (Instructor Lisa Henderson)

Congratulations to the competitors and their instructors! Join us if your schedule allows.
