MLK Day of Service and Remembrance

Join us as we virtually commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life, work, and philosophy on Monday, January 18th, 2021!

The Martin Luther King Day of Service & Remembrance will take place from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and will include the following:

  • A series of dance and spoken word performances
  • A reading and discussion of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech
  • A moderated conversation with Ohio House of Representatives Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-34th District) and Ohio State Senator Vernon Sykes (D-28th District)
  • The launch of a community-wide service experience affiliated with the United Way of Portage County's Reading Role Models program

This event will also launch a community-wide service experience in partnership with the United Way of Portage County in which groups volunteers can register to receive one of two children's books describing Dr. King's life and work, record themselves reading the book on video, and then submit the video file for use in the United Way of Portage County's Reading Role Models program in local elementary schools and community centers.

This event is part of the Kent State University Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration.
