Why did you choose podiatric medicine? It was clear to me that I wanted to spend my life helping and educating others. After careful consideration I realized that podiatric medicine was what I wanted to spend my life doing as it allows me to teach and treat patients everyday. Podiatric medicine is a very hands-on field and allows us to treat patients fully both conservatively and surgically.Becoming a podiatric surgeon is more than just being a doctor but rather an educator and advocator for my patients.
Why did you choose Kent State? There was something very unique about my interview experience at KSUCPM. As soon as I walked in those doors it felt like a place I could spend 4 years of my life learning and growing into the person I am today. I felt the most comfortable here at KSUCPM and I really felt like I belonged!
Favorite aspect of Kent State now that you are a student here:I have met so many wonderful people during this process of becoming a podiatric surgeon. Not only are the faculty here at KSUCPM always willing to help but they go out of their way to ensure all students are succeeding.
As a first-year student, what are some of the challenges you faced while transitioning into medical school?Medical school is tough but as long as you have a strong work ethic throughout undergraduate training the transition will be smooth. KSUCPM has all the resources available to help students with the transition. The biggest challenge I faced was not giving myself a break between studying, class and extra-curricular activities. It can get overwhelming at times but time-management was and still is very valuable.
What advice do you have for anyone considering podiatry school? My best advice would be to take the time to shadow a podiatrist (over several months if possible) and see what podiatry entails. There are aspects within our scope of practice that I have recently learned about by traveling to various programs that I previously did not realize podiatric surgeon's performed.
What are some of the activities/clubs you are involved in at KSUCPM?I was actively involved with a student club called the American Association of Women Podiatrists (AAWP) by at first becoming a member than Vice-president and then finally President.Through this organization I co-sponsored the OPMSA Student symposium and coordinated the first External-Fixation Workshop for students. As well I was a Student Ambassador for KSUCPM where I represented the college at various events and guided all potential students throughout their interview day.
