Undergraduate Institution: Columbus State University (Columbus, GA)
Why did you choose podiatric medicine? I was premed in Undergrad, but after hundreds of hours shadowing I decided that healthcare wasn’t for me. There wasn’t a field in medicine that I was passionate enough about. I left premed to become an educator, and it was during that time that I visited a podiatrist with an ingrown toenail. His demeanor and general happiness peaked my interest. After shadowing him for a day, I was hooked! Podiatrists see patients over a wide age range, with a plethora of conditions, and have the ability to do very well for themselves financially. Plus, podiatry offers one of the best family-work balances in all of medicine and you are guaranteed to be in a surgical field when you choose podiatry. What’s not to like?!
Why did you choose Kent State? After being accepted at another school, I decided not to take anymore interviews. However, I felt strongly that I was supposed to visit KSUCPM. The day before the interview as I was walking around Independence, I was certain that this was the place where I was supposed to be. I knew I was going to Kent before I was even accepted. This is a wonderful place to meet people, get involved in the community, and relax at the end of the day. There was such a peace of mind about my calling to move to Cleveland, and I haven’t looked back since. We love it here.
Favorite aspect of Kent State now that you are a student here: The people. We are a family here. Some of my best friends have been made here. We say it a lot, but this place really is all about community.
As a first-year student, what are some of the challenges you faced while transitioning into medical school? As a first year student, I was also a brand new husband! My wife was finishing her degree in Georgia, while I was navigating through first year and all its difficulties. It was very tough on both of us, but the community and friendships at KSUCPM really got me though the hardest times.
What advice do you have for anyone considering podiatry school? Reach out! This is a big life decision, both in terms of your profession and your financial future. You need to be given solid advice from those who have gone before you. Reach out to Carla or Angela in the KSUCPM Student Recruitment office and they will put you in touch with a Student Ambassador. This is a great way to learn about the curriculum, profession, and future outlook. My prediction is that after speaking with one of us you too will decide that this is the place you will want to be!
What are some of the activities/clubs you are involved in at KSUCPM? I am the APMSA Representative for the Class of 2022, and I serve on the OPMSA Board for our school. I attend conferences annually to represent podiatry students across all nine schools and I work alongside the other members of the KSUCPM delegation to tackle the challenges facing our students and our profession.
