Academic Advising for Undergraduates

Why Do I Have Two sets of Advisors?

Students will be guided by the College (Arts & Sciences) in their first year.  Department advisors are always available and we encourage students to meet the department advisors before they register for upcoming semesters.

College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Advising

The college's professional advisors are the ideal resource for students who want to discuss transfer credit, AP credit, placement into Math or other courses, or graduation requirements. Their Offfice of Undergraduate Advising and Student Services is located in 105 Bowman Hall and they can be reached by email at asadvise@kent.edu

Department of Computer Science Undergraduate Faculty Advising

The department's faculty advisors are the ideal resource for students who want to discuss computer science in general, the requirements for the major, the optional concentrations, or specific courses. They can also discuss your course plan for the next semester or two, and help you select electives to meet your interests.

How to get in touch with a CS faculty advisor:

If you would like to ask a question by email, please contact the faculty advisors as a group by sending email to ugradinfo@cs.kent.edu.

Advisors are also happy to see you in person or online during their office hours, posted below.  Email or call them if you need a different meeting time other than the posted office hours.   If meeting online, it would be ideal for you to be at a computer with audio, and while you're welcome to use a webcam, it is not required.

(Prospective students may use our online sessions to ask questions, or stop in during the advisor's office hours, or use email to ask a question or to set up an appointment outside of the specified office hours.)

Here are some of the ways an advisor can help you:

  • Advisors answer daily emails from current students asking questions about their schedules, courses, internships, and concentrations, etc.;

  • Advisors meet with CS students (virtually and in-person) to explain the degree requirements, different concentrations options and to help them choose classes for the upcoming semesters;

  • Advisors conduct info sessions twice a month to meet with prospective students and their families and go over the different programs we have (BS, MS, MA, etc.) and different concentrations, career opportunities, and job opportunities for CS students.

  • Advisors evaluate courses taken at different institutions and see if they are equivalent to our courses;

  • Advisors advise students about computing careers;

  • Advisors make presentations to high school students and attract these students to apply for the program.
