Why Study Gender & Sexuality?

Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality

Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality is to advance the interdisciplinary scholarly exploration of gender and sexuality and to create and share knowledge with students, scholars and the public.

Vision Statement

The study of gender and sexuality requires flexibility and interdisciplinary inquiry, therefore the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality will regularly assess its vision and structure, and will evolve accordingly.

The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality will advance the scholarly exploration of gender and sexuality through four focus areas: Academic Programs, Public Scholarship, Research, and Student Academic Services.

Academic Programs

The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality will support three independent but linked interdisciplinary undergraduate academic programs: Gender and Sexuality, LGBT Studies and Women’s Studies. Students from all Kent campuses will be able to complete major and minor programs, and will have access to quality online and face-to-face courses. The Center will develop graduate courses and concentrations in gender and sexuality.

Public Scholarship

Through committed community association, public engagement, educational programming, and relationships with the media, the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality will become a local, regional and national leader on the discourse and understanding of important topics related to the gender and sexuality. Teaching and learning will extend beyond the Kent State University student population through a commitment for sharing knowledge, research and creative activities with the public.

Research

The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality will foster interdisciplinary research and creative activities about gender and sexuality, support grant development and student scholarships and assistantships, and become a regional leader and nexus for sponsoring scholarly inquiry on gender and sexuality.

Student Academic Support and Services

The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality will become an academic home for students at all Kent State campuses who are engaged in learning about gender and sexuality. It will collaborate with student support staff, offices and resources to ensure that program students from all campuses, colleges and schools have their advising and academic support needs met.

Value Statement

The intellectual and scholarly work of the Center intersects with scholarly work about race, class, nationality, religion, immigrant status, ability and other identity markers. Because of this intersection, the Center is committed to forging relationships within and beyond Kent State University that uphold global human rights, economic equality, and ecological justice. The Center will engage in meaningful and progressive discourse about marginalized groups and intersecting identities with the goal of improving society. In addition, because social constructions of gender, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation frequently connect to social and structural violence, the Center faculty, staff and programs will work toward understanding and resisting state, societal and interpersonal coercion and violence.
