Iowa Teaching Certifications

- Journalism Teaching Endorsement: Yes
- Pass state assessment or certification test/s: Journalism 5-12. Completion of fifteen semester hours in journalism to include course work in writing, editing, production, and visual communications. A course in the methods of teaching this subject is required in addition to the 15 hours.

Then scroll down to #141, the Journalism section. Also view “Iowa Journalism Endorsement Checklist.” If a teacher is assigned to a class that teaches specific journalism content or produces a journalistic product (newspaper, yearbook, etc.) they must have the endorsement. The endorsement is based on completion of the required coursework, and there is no certification test.
- NCATE or National Accreditation required: No
- Accepts candidates from states participating in the NASDTEC Interstate Contract: Iowa does NOT belong to the NASDTEC Interstate Contract, however they currently maintain exchange agreements with Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
