As the Assistant Director of the Student Multicultural Center, for the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), I am responsible for coordinating and providing leadership to cultivate students’ sense of belonging at Kent State University. Specifically, I provide programmatic oversight for the Academic S.T.A.R.S. Program, Kupita/Transiciones, Karamu, Sister Circle and the SMC Leadership Council. Furthermore, I coordinate, analyze and develop data reports, serve as the fiscal steward and supervise the student assistants.
I came to Kent State University as a participant in the Upward Bound Math Science Program back in 2003 and since then, I have earned my Bachelor and Master’s degree here. As a graduate student, I served as a Graduate Research Assistant for the Human Development and Family Studies program. And during the summer months I was a Graduate Student Advisor for the Office of Academic Advising Services and a Special Assistant for the Upward Bound Programs. Additionally, I interned one semester in the Planning Assessment and Research Management Office within DEI.
Favorite place on the Kent campus:
I’m biased, so I would have to say the Student Multicultural Center. It is my second home, which is filled with love from the students and staff.
Best advice for students:
Embrace who you are and be willing to step outside your comfort zone. For growth cannot occur in a place of comfort or attempting to be someone else.
