Chris Venable Schaefbauer Presents at National Advising Conference

Chris Venable Schaefbauer, doctoral student in Cultural Foundations, recently delivered two presentations at the annual conference of NACADA - The Global Community for Academic Advising in St. Louis, Missouri.  Chris presented “Developing a Critical Orientation in Advising: What Sara Ahmed Can Teach Us”, which drew from Sara Ahmed's book, The Promise of Happiness, and introduced advisors to the purpose of critique and critical perspectives as applied to academic advising.  They also presented “Listening to Trans Voices: Learning from Trans* in College”.  This presentation introduced advisors to Z Nicolazzo's 2016 book Trans* In College: Transgender Students’ Strategies for Navigating Campus Life and the Institutional Politics of Inclusion, based on hir dissertation study.  The session focused on the role advisors play in creating more liberatory collegiate environments for trans students while considering how to support these students in new ways.  See Chris' profile for more information on their research interests.
