Kent State Hosts Annual Run the World 5K on Sept. 10

The Run the World 5K is a special, global-themed race designed to support education-abroad scholarships for students. The Run the World 5K is the only universitywide scholarship fund that is designed to financially support any student at Kent State University in any major to study abroad through any Kent State-sponsored program in any country during their time at the university. Walkers, runners and donations are needed for the race.

The Run the World 5K, which will take place on Sept. 10, consists of a 3.2-mile course that follows the Lefton Esplanade through the beautiful Kent Campus and part of downtown Kent. This event is a walk/run so you need not be a marathon runner to join in this worthy cause. Strollers and dogs are welcome, too!

Now more than ever, Kent State is considered a leader in global education. With more than 200 international programs anchored by the university’s flagship in Florence, Italy, Kent State students have the world at their fingertips.

Education Abroad Fun Fact: Did you know that 97 percent of college students who study abroad find employment within 12 months of graduation, compared to only 49 percent of students who do not study abroad?

Financial support in the form of scholarships can help make this unique opportunity possible for more students at Kent State. Last year, through donations and registration fees, this event raised enough money to award eight students each with a $1,000 scholarship. This year, we hope to generate enough funds to support 12-15 students.

As part of the healthy campus and students first initiatives, the Division of Human Resources wellness team has added an extra incentive for faculty and staff participants. All faculty and staff who register and complete the walk/run will be entered into a prize drawing for a free Garmin VivoFit or $50 gift certificate to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Multiple prizes will be awarded.

Registration is $25 and includes a finisher medal and a dri-fit T-shirt! There also will be fun finisher events, and various establishments in Kent and neighboring cities, such as Hudson and Stow, have agreed to offer a discount on menu items to participants who bring their finisher medal on race day.

This is a great opportunity to get some movement in your day. You can invite family, friends or co-workers to participate and support a wonderful cause! We look forward to seeing you at the event!
