Main Street Kent Continues Tradition of Black Squirrel Friday and Small Business Saturday; Mayor Fiala Declares Free Two-Hour Parking Day

There are many benefits to shopping at local businesses, and Main Street Kent is happy to provide a few more good reasons to "shop small" this holiday season. The days immediately following Thanksgiving are meant to get holiday shopping done -- or at least get it started -- and now there are even more reasons to do it in Kent, thanks to Main Street Kent and the city of Kent.

For a refresher: spending money at locally owned and operated businesses is good for your local economy. For every $1 spent at a local business, up to 70 percent stays right in your city. To sweeten the deal a little bit here in Kent, how about some free parking? On Friday, Nov. 27, Mayor Jerry Fiala has declared it a "free two-hour parking day” in all metered spots in downtown Kent (time limits still apply and will be enforced, but there’s no need to pay!)

Black Squirrel Lotto

Also on Friday, Nov. 27, come do some serious shopping in Kent and partake in the Black Squirrel Lotto. Shoppers who spend $25 in Kent on Black Squirrel Friday will be entered in a drawing to win hundreds of dollars in gift cards to downtown businesses! Simply stop in the Destination Kent Visitor Centre (located at 201 E. Erie St.) from noon to 5 p.m. with receipts from shopping in Kent, and receive one entry to win for every $25 spent! Spend $100 and get four entries to win and so on. It is Main Street Kent's way of showing the community the importance and appreciation for supporting our local businesses. Drawings will be held on Monday, Nov. 30.

Small Business Saturday

Then on Saturday, Nov. 28, join the nationwide initiative known as Small Business Saturday. Another full day of great shopping deals will be available at the many unique shops in downtown Kent. Shoppers can find toys, books, gourmet popcorn, music, shoes, clothing and accessories, coffee, wine, artisan cheeses and more at the many shops in Kent. To add some fun to the day, Main Street Kent is hosting the annual Sweet Finds Contest. While shopping in the downtown district, hunt for the hidden sweet treats in select downtown businesses and enter to win hundreds of dollars in gift cards to downtown businesses. Full details are available at www.mainstreetkent.org.

Also, while shopping in Kent in the coming weeks, keep your eye out for “$20 Specials @ 20 Shops.” Downtown merchants are preparing special gift options so there are lots of great choices for just $20 each – a full gift list and online catalog will be available soon at www.mainstreetkent.org.

Main Street Kent is a nonprofit organization focused on the revitalization of downtown Kent. It is an affiliate of the national Main Street program and the Heritage Ohio program.
