Downtown Gallery

Kent State University’s School of Art presents “THE UNAMERICANS: Photographs by Bruce Checefsky,” on view through Sept. 23 at the Downtown Gallery in Kent. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 5-7 p.m.Bruce Checefsky photographed the street culture surrounding the Republican National Convention using an iPhone 5 as a primary camera.

“THE UNAMERICANS” is a critical observation of the distinctive GOP at an astonishing time in our political history. “THE UNAMERICANS” documents the Republican National Convention in Cleveland as a way of understanding who these people are and why they supported Donald Trump for president. The artist’s concept for “THE UNAMERICANS” was to photograph the street culture surrounding the Republican National Convention using an iPhone 5 as a primary camera. The intention is to present the work as an act of social discourse during these extraordinary times.

Bruce Checefsky is director of the Reinberger Gallery at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he has curated more than 80 national and international exhibitions of contemporary art, film and design. He also teaches courses in film and museum studies. Since 2001, Bruce Checefsky has directed more than a dozen short films based on lost or unrealized scripts of the European avant-garde. Checefsky’s works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, among others. He received Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Excellence Award for Photography in 2017 and Individual Artist Excellence Award for Film in 2013 and 2007. In 2009, Checefsky was awarded a Creative Workforce Fellowship from the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture.

The Downtown Gallery is located at 141 S. Main Street in Kent. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Sunday, noon-5 p.m.
