Pulitzer Prize Winner Connie Schultz to Be Guest Speaker for Mothers, Mentors and Muses Scholarship Fundraiser Reception

Kent State Student Center Ballroom

The Kent State University Women’s Center Advisory Board will host the eighth annual Mothers, Mentors and Muses Scholarship Fundraiser Reception. The event will take place at the Kent Student Center Ballroom on March 14 from 5-7:30 p.m. The guest speaker for this year’s event is Connie Schultz, Kent State faculty member, alumna and Pulitzer Prize winner.

Schultz, ’79, joined Kent State's College of Communication and Information and School of Journalism and Mass Communication faculty in January 2016. She is currently a nationally syndicated columnist for Creators Syndicate and teaches courses in the journalism sequence.

Schultz served as a reporter and columnist at The Plain Dealer for nearly 20 years, from 1993 to 2011. While there, she was a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, earning the award in 2005 for Commentary. Schultz also earned such prestigious awards as the National Headliner Award for Commentary, the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award for Commentary, the Batten Medal, the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Social Justice Reporting and more.

The event honors women as either a mother, someone who has helped “birth” new ideas and thoughts in others and also has served as an overall nurturing individual; a mentor, an individual who has been both a role model and a trusted counselor to others; or a muse, an individual who has inspired both creativity and academic enthusiasm in others. Over the past seven years, approximately 375 women have been honored in these respective roles.

The Women’s Center, which was established in 1996, supports women in their academic careers. Funds raised at the event will fund $500 scholarship awards for two Kent State female or female-identifying students. This scholarship has benefited 25 students since its introduction in 2003.
