Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, Other Events Mark Sexual Assault Awareness Month at Kent State

Kent State University’s Office of Sexual and Relationship Violence Support Services, in collaboration with departments across campus, will once again sponsor and promote a month of programs, events, and awareness for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual Assault Awareness Month is recognized nationally in the United States every April to educate communities on how to prevent sexual and power-based violence. One of the most popular events during the month is Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, and the Office of Sexual and Relationship Violence Support Services needs your support to make it a success.

Walk a Mile in Their Shoes is an event that aims to create a united gender movement where everyone will be a part of the solution to ending sexualized violence. The Walk a Mile program will include games, a keynote speaker and the march across campus. Men participating in Walk a Mile in Their Shoes are asked to wear heels for the event. Women are asked to wear tennis shoes. This year’s keynote speaker is Jennifer Kulics, Ph.D., interim associate vice president and dean of students at Kent State. Kulics will speak on how we can work together to make Kent State a safe campus.

Walk a Mile in Their Shoes at Kent State will take place on Monday, April 11, with check-in starting at 5 p.m.  Games will begin at 5:30 p.m., starting at the Kent Student Center Kiva. All members of the Kent State community are invited to attend. Registration for the event is now open at www.kent.edu/WAM.

“Sexual and power-based violence is a serious issue, and we need your help to end this epidemic,” says Alicia Robinson, program coordinator for Kent State’s Women’s Center.
