About EXCEL:

EXCEL (EXploring Careers, Education and Leadership) is a Learning Community for first-year exploratory students designed to help promote major and career exploration, provide a foundation for a 4-Year graduation path and foster relationships among students, faculty and staff.

Why become an EXCEL Mentor?

EXCEL Mentors are current students at Kent State University who assist first-year exploratory students participating in the EXCEL Learning Community through their first year as they transition from high school to college. EXCEL Mentors work with students in a variety of settings to assist with major and career exploration, academic support, building relationships among peers and navigating the Kent campus and community. 

EXCEL Mentors meet with students one-on-one, in small groups hosting office hours in Lake Hall. EXCEL Mentors also develop and lead specific programming for the community focused on:

  • Major and Career Exploration
  • Academic Success
  • Community Engagement
  • Leadership

Position Description:

  • Paid position at 7-8 hours per week
  • Work with groups of approximately 20 first-year exploratory students to assist in the transitions of declaring a major
  • Provide support and resources for EXCEL community and Lake Hall, including insight and personal experience in major and career exploration
  • Staff EXCEL office for regular office hours                         
  • Plan, implement and participate in EXCEL specific activities and programs
  • Develop leadership skills through training sessions and regular meetings
  • Lead service-related projects geared towards both a small group and the entire hall
  • Brainstorm and implement creative and innovative ideas to build community within EXCEL
  • Provide support and resources for EXCEL community and Lake Hall, including insight and personal experience in major and career exploration
  • Serve as a liaison between EXCEL students and University College

Required Qualifications:

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Completion of the Peer Leader Training Course
  • Enrolled as a full-time student (12 credit hours minimum) each semester for the 2020-2021 academic year
  • Commitment to entire 2020-2021 academic year

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Former experience as an exploratory student
  • Former experience participating in the EXCEL Learning Community
  • Knowledge of the needs of first-year exploratory students
  • Work-Study Eligible

Hiring Timeline:

  • January 25 - Online Application Available
  • February 21 - All application materials are due
  • March 2 - March 20- Mentor candidate interviews
  • March 31 - Mentor staff selection made
  • April 24 - Mandatory EXCEL Mentor staff orientation
