Life in NYC
NYC is a vibrant, multicultural metropolis that offers a myriad of diverse and dynamic opportunities. As the artistic, economic and political center of the Fashion Industry, living in New York City is an unforgettable experience that exponentially enhances one’s understanding of the fashion industry. Each neighborhood, in each of the five boroughs that comprises New York City, encompasses a unique character and exciting events. The NYC Studio provides incoming students with comprehensive suggestions on short term housing, things to do around the city, and tips from past NYC Studio students.
Living in New York City for the first time can be an overwhelming experience. However, once you become acclimated it will be easy to see why an estimated 7 million people live here and 1 million visitors sightsee and do business here – there is no city like it in the world. From the towering skyline to the culturally rich neighborhoods, New York offers a profusion of resources. For some, it will feel like you are living in a foreign country – from the array of languages spoken on the street, to the variety of ethnic shops and restaurants, to the diversity of the people. This is what makes NYC so unique and creates such a thriving environment.
At times you may be out of your comfort zone and your daily routine, but always keep in mind that you are the creator of your own experience. Take advantage of the opportunities that await you with an open mind and creativity and face your challenges with patience and consideration. In the coming months, spend time preparing for your new “home”. The more you familiarize yourself with the city (street maps, transportation, neighborhoods, etc.) the easier it will be to adapt once you arrive.
Above all, have fun! Remember, you are not a tourist, but a participant in an educational experience that utilizes NYC as its textbook. Take advantage of every opportunity, as this is the experience of a lifetime.
