Columbus Alumni Networking Event Brings Together Fashion School Alumni and Industry Leaders

Over the summer, alumni from The Kent State University School of Fashion Design and Merchandising gathered in Columbus, Ohio for the school’s first-annual alumni networking event.

Held at the Medallion Club in Westerville, over 30 alumni living in the Columbus area attended the event. While there, they had the opportunity to mix and mingle with local fashion professionals, as well as with several of their former fashion design and merchandising professors. Columbus is home to the headquarters of several large fashion retailers. Representatives from L Brands (Victoria’s Secret, PINK, Bath and Body Works), Justice, DSW, Zulily and several brands were in attendance to network with the alums.

In addition to networking, the event also served as a fundraising opportunity for student scholarships to help fund the costs of studying abroad, which is a requirement of all fashion students before graduation. Attendees spent the evening bidding on silent-auction gift baskets containing a variety of products from an array of generous donors including L Brands, Justice, The Columbus Museum of Art, The Columbus Association for the Performing Arts, Alternative Fashion Mob, The Fashion School Store and many others, along with several faculty-donated gifts and baskets.

The Fashion School looks to continue building relationships with alumni and is planning several events in the upcoming months at the school’s NYC Studio. Located in the Garment District at the epicenter of the fashion world, the NYC Studio provides full-semester academic programs for Kent State fashion students during the fall, spring, or summer terms. Students learn from instructors who have successful careers in the NYC fashion industry and participate in prestigious. After graduating, many Fashion School alums move to the city to further their fashion careers in one of the largest fashion capitals in the world. The NYC Studio’s next event will be in November and will focus on body positivity. This panel discussion by industry leaders will address body positivity, size and shape inclusion, the plus-size market and fashion industry representation. Alumni and current students studying at the Studio are invited to attend. More details about the event to come.
