Recent Fashion Design Graduate Chosen to Represent Kent State at 2018 Supima Fashion Design Competition
Since graduating with a B.F.A. in fashion design last spring, Alanna Lizun has begun making a name for herself in the fashion world. During the Fashion School’s 2018 Annual Fashion Show it was announced that she won “Best in Show” for her collection “Arguments + Eruptions.” On that same night, it was also announced that she was chosen to represent Kent State in the 2018 Supima Design Competition for her collection titled “Growing Up Female.” Out of the thousands of applicants, Lizun was one of only seven participants chosen in the entire country to compete in this competition.
Now in its eleventh year, the Supima Design Competition was created to introduce the next generation of designers into the fashion industry. Graduating seniors from some of the top design schools in the country are chosen to represent their school and compete for a $10,000 cash prize and an opportunity to show their collections in front of high profile fashion audiences in New York City and Paris. Lizun joins previous Kent State nominees: Sarah Johnson (2017), Kara Michelle Kroeger (2016), Paige Meacham (2015), Anastasia Iafrate (2014) and Sylvia Bukowski (2013).
Every year, finalists are challenged with creating a womenswear capsule collection using premium Supima cotton fabrics. Each student designer works with a mentor throughout the entire process. Lizun chose Fashion School assistant professor Chanjuan Chen to assist her. Said Chen, “Alanna is a very passionate student who has worked extremely hard and used her experience in knitwear to make an incredibly unique Supima collection. I’m proud of her and all that she has accomplished so far.”
Lizun’s “Growing Up Female.” collection was inspired by the idea that the pressures of the outside world affect how young girls develop and grow. Her collection explores women who were forced to grow up at a young age and how they are trying to regain their sense of innocence. She highlights this idea through fabric manipulation and raw fabric edges.
The 2018 Supima Design Competition runway show will be held on September 6, at Pier 59 in New York City as part of New York Fashion Week. The event will be live-streamed via the Supima website at 4pm (ET) for those who cannot attend in person. The competition finalists will be judged by a diverse panel of fashion industry leaders and the winner will be announced upon completion of the show. Final collections will also be presented during Paris Fashion Week, with the winning designer in attendance.
