Overview

Founded in 1997, American University of Sharjah (AUS) is a relatively young institution and offers many accredited academic programs. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the official language is Arabic; however, all classes and administrative functions at AUS are conducted in English. With approximately 5,000 students and 90 nationalities represented at AUS, the campus community is committed to promoting a globally and culturally diverse environment. Students enjoy living on the beautiful campus, participating in extracurricular activities, and experiencing the energy of this quickly developing nation. The UAE is known for being safe and having very low levels of property and violent crime.

Living in Sharjah

Exchange students at AUS will live in the on-campus dormitories, which are located near the academic buildings, library, food court, and Sports Complex. There are seven residence halls for men and five residence halls for women, all of which are supervised by staff 24/7. The three room types available are private (single occupancy with private bath and kitchenette), semi-private (single occupancy with shared bath and kitchenette), and sharing (double occupancy with shared bath and kitchenette) rooms; some men's residence halls also feature single and double rooms with a common bath and no kitchenette. All dorms feature high-speed WiFi, computer rooms, laundry rooms, weekly cleaning by cleaning staff, vending machines, student lounges with large TVs, table tennis and foosball tables. Most dorms also have fitness rooms. Students are provided with bedding (bed sheet, pillow, pillowcase, quilt) and all rooms are furnished with a single bed, desk, chair, wardrobe, bedside table, Venetian blinds, and air-conditioning; private rooms also have a sofa and coffee table.

Meal plans are not available, but students are able to either cook in their dormitory room or common kitchen in their residence hall, or visit one of the on-campus eateries (popular American chains as well as local cuisine). There are two mini-marts on campus where students can easily purchase groceries and household items.

Other amenities on campus include a women's salon, a men's barbershop, a pharmacy, University Health Services, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, and many student organizations. Free transportation is offered from the residence halls to main points around campus.
