The process to study abroad involves a lot of careful planning, and the sooner you start - the better. We recommend that you start the process at least a year in advance. Acquiring or renewing your passport is a simple and easy way to begin your preparations for studying abroad, especially if you haven’t decided on a destination or program yet.
How to Successfully Prepare to Study Abroad
The information listed below outlines the preparation process for studying abroad. These steps are not meant to be linear and can be completed in any order. However, it is recommended that you meet with your academic advisor, education abroad advisor, academic department and financial aid coordinator at least once before applying to an education abroad program.
1. Research programs
Explore the abundance of programs offered to get a general idea of your numerous study abroad options. Keep in mind that programs each have their own requirements such as GPA, language proficiency, major, and class standing.
2. Meet with your Academic Advisor
Meeting with your academic advisor will help you determine the best time for you to go abroad according to your degree plan. Your academic advisor can also recommend which classes to take abroad and how those classes might transfer back.
3. Meet with an Education Abroad Advisor
Meeting with an education abroad advisor will offer more insight regarding program details (including finding class listings), advise you on the application process, and aid with the logistics of studying abroad.
4. Meet with a Financial Aid Counselor
Students with questions about using federal financial aid or Kent State scholarships will need to speak with a financial aid counselor for education abroad. Please email Financial Aid directly at email@example.com with questions.
5. Apply for your passport
You will need a passport to travel abroad. You should apply for your passport or review the expiration date of your current passport.
6. Review entry and exit requirements
There may be specific passport, visa, or vaccination requirements for travel to your host country(ies). It is strongly recommended that you carefully review the appropriate consulate or embassy website for the nation(s) you plan to visit in order to determine current entry/exit visa requirements. U.S. citizens may find out more about entry, exit, and visas visiting the website of the U.S. Bureau for Consular Affairs.
