How to Receive the I-20 or DS-2019

Now that you are admitted, you will need an immigration document in order to obtain your student visa. Please send your passport and financial document(s) to i20@kent.edu. You must show that you have the financial resources to pay for at least one academic year of studying in Kent State, with the expectation that you will continue to have funding for the duration of your studies. This funding should cover tuition, fees, living expenses, medical insurance, and books/supplies while you are in the U.S. Financial documents can be in the form of a bank statement, graduate/research assistantship letter, or financial guarantee from your government. The table below shows the required amount of funds you will need to show based on your educational level. If you have been offered a graduate or research assistantship, please send it to i20@kent.edu, as it may reduce the amount of funding you need to show.

Transfer-in students from a U.S. high school or university with a current valid SEVIS ID (N00XXXXXXXX) should look over our Transfer-In Guide and contact isss@kent.edu for assistance in transferring your SEVIS record to KSU.

Already on a U.S. visa (not F or J)? Contact isss@kent.edu for more information on your next steps.

International Freshman who are not transferring from another institution in the U.S. may be eligible for scholarship. All scholarship is listed in your FlashLine in your checklist. It is important to accept this scholarship as soon as possible. It may take time to update, so we recommend checking periodically.

Dependent Visas

Dependent visas will require additional documentation. If you would like your spouse, child, or both to join you at KSU on a dependent visa, additional funding and scans of the passport of each dependent is required. Please send all documents to i20@kent.edu. In the email, it is important to notify us of your intention to bring your spouse/child and state your relation to each individual (i.e. Martha is my wife and Gabe is my child). The funding can be shown on the same financial document you submit for your I-20. The additional funding amount required is:

  • $4,500 for spouse or other first dependent and

  • $2,500 for each additional dependent.

Important Considerations
  • Do not make your visa appointment until you have your I-20. You will not be able to obtain a visa without your I-20. We cannot expedite or “rush” an I-20 to you if you have scheduled a visa appointment without an I-20. We use DHL to mail documents internationally, but, depending on where you live, it may take two to three weeks for your I-20 to arrive. Please be patient during this time, as we have no control over the international mailing system. If you have not received your I-20 four weeks after you were notified that your I-20 was sent, please contact us at i20@kent.edu.

  • Are you from Iran? We are currently unable to ship to Iran. Please let us know where you would like your I-20 shipped by contacting i20@kent.edu.

  • Should you have received your package already? Your local DHL Center may try to contact you by phone when your I-20 arrives. If you have not received a call, check with your local DHL Center to see if your packet has arrived.
