The University of Rwanda

Students studying abroad at the Kigali Summer Institute

The new base of operations in Kigali will give the university its first permanent presence on the African continent, and already has opened the door for a multitude of programs and exchanges between Kent State University and the University of Rwanda (UR).

Rwanda is known in recent history for the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi that left over one million dead. Following the liberation of Rwanda, the country faced the monumental task of peacebuilding and reconstruction. Today, Rwanda is a pillar of economic stability, health, safety and security, and is an up-and-coming destination for education in the region and world.

The largest city in Rwanda, Kigali

Kent State Kigali’s location will add further dimensions to your education. Kigali is the capital and Rwanda's largest city, serving as its economic, cultural, and transport hub. It is near the nation's geographic centre in a region of rolling hills, with a series of valleys and ridges joined by steep slopes.

It is also possible to use most Kent State scholarships for education abroad costs. If you receive a tuition waiver, that can also be applied to eligible education abroad programs. It is important to note that if you do receive a tuition waiver, you must make sure to tell your Education Abroad Advisor.

If you receive Post 9/11 GI Bill funds, you may be able to use that money to help pay for study abroad. The US Department of Veterans Affairs has created a sheet to explain what GI Bill funds might cover.
