Overview
Kent State students have the opportunity to participate in the Département d’Etudes de Français Langue Étrangère (DEFLE) program here. With Bordeaux's rich history and vibrant city, students will have the experience of a lifetime getting practical experience in French language acquisition and cultural immersion. Bordeaux III is one of the largest campuses in Europe and has over 1,800 international students.
Location
The cultural, artistic, and music scenes are very vibrant in Bordeaux. The city was ruled by the English for a long time, which is why Bordeaux seems to have an "English flair."
Bordeaux is often referred to as "Little Paris" and the rivalry between the "Bordelais" (people from Bordeaux) and "Parisiens" is a hot subject.
Bordeaux is a flat city, built on the banks of the Garonne River. It is also the largest French city by area, and geographically one of the largest in Europe. The city center is located west and south of the Garonne. To the east are a few hills - the only ones in the vicinity. These hills mark the beginning of an industrial zone and suburbs. Because it is a flat city, bicycles make excellent modes of transportation, especially as the city has more than 580 km of bicycle lanes.
Bordeaux is among the most economically dynamic cities in France.
Academics
The special Departement d'Etudes de Francais Langue Etrangere (DEFLE) program is designed for non-native French-speaking students to take a full course load of French as a foreign language, at all levels of proficiency.
While there is no language requirement to participate in the French language learning program (DEFLE), we do recommend that you have some French language background. Whether you are new to speaking French or an advance student, you will will find the appropriate level courses available. If you wish to take classes with local French students, there is a language proficiency requirement.
Living in Bordeaux
Students register for housing with CROUS-Bordeaux and students are responsible for purchasing meals. CROUS does have cafeterias and restaurants near university housing.
