FDM 45095 ST: Northern Renaissance: Art and the Birth of Fashion

Study of stylistic and iconographic questions and technique in Northern panel painting, as well as other arts, especially imagery impacting and interacting with the development of fashion in Northern Europe from ca.1350–1575.

A research paper is required of each student in the class (approximately 10 pages).  The specific topic is up to you, but should be something within the limits of the class materials: Northern European Art and Fashion (including that in Spain and Portugal and their colonies), ca.1350 – 1575.

Honors students will expand on their Research Paper topic to delve deeper into the concept of “fashion,” including investigating and applying theories of fashion change, primarily the Imitation/Differentiation (Trickle Down) Theory, to this period in history.   Honors papers will be approximately 15 pages in length.
