Writing Excellence Earns Honors Students Awards and Scholarships

Each academic year, the Department of English at Kent State University awards student prizes in creative writing, critical writing and writing in freshman English courses.

This year, 14 students who are members of the Kent State Honors College were recipients of various awards.

The Virginia Perryman Awards are awarded to freshmen, and all three of the Kent campus recipients are Honors College students including Hailee Zendlo, Morgan Starkey and Lydia Stater.

Shen Wen Tan, Katelyn Lawver, Tiffany Campbell and Zachary Nickels were all named recipients of a Toerne scholarship.

Anna Adams, Andrew Wyatt, and Brittany Cole were named sole recipients of the Stieskal, Stockdale and Vicent scholarships, respectively.

The John C. Tamplin Award for Excellence in Writing Center Work is given annually by the Writing Commons to recognize the excellent work of Writing Commons tutors and to honor the outstanding contributions of Writing Commons tutors to the intellectual life of Kent State University. Emily Bouza and Lucy Merriman were both named recipients of this award.

Gabby Seed was awarded a book scholarship, and Hagan Whiteleather was recognized as one of three 2015 Distinguished Graduating Seniors.
