Wertz Wins Alpha Lambda Delta Scholarship

Kaitlyn Wertz, a sophomore from Canton, Ohio, has developed the habit of applying for any scholarship that she sees that she qualifies for. If she believes there is a chance that she will receive it, even if that chance may be small, she will apply.  Kaitlyn’s diligence has paid off, as she has recently received a James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship.  This national scholarship is awarded to members of Alpha Lambda Delta who will participate in credit-bearing study abroad programs that further their academic studies.  Kaitlyn, who has been a member of Kent State’s Alpha Lambda Delta chapter since 2018, will be studying in Florence, Italy during the Spring 2020 semester.

Kaitlyn was informed of this scholarship via Alpha Lambda Delta’s emails.  She is excited to have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live in Florence for four months that studying abroad will allow her. Kaitlyn is a nutrition major, and in the future, she wants to work in private practice nutrition, where she will assist her clients with their health and dietary habits.  She says that having her own nutrition practice will involve working with many clients; having knowledge of different cultural backgrounds will be beneficial to her, as she will have to know how individuals’ diets vary based on their cultures and where they come from.  One of Kaitlyn’s goals while she is in Florence is to experience as many cultures as she can.

Kaitlyn talked to Alpha Lambda Delta advisor Lauren Huffman about the scholarship, and Lauren assisted her throughout the process of applying.  Completing the scholarship application motivated Kaitlyn to think about why she was going to Florence; in addition to her love of traveling, she thought about it in terms of how it would impact her education and career.  After some reflection, she realized that it would impact those aspects of her life as well and provide valuable insight that she will be able to apply to her future career.

For students who are interested in applying for scholarships, Kaitlyn encourages them to apply for whatever scholarships they can, even if they think there is only a chance that they might receive them. She hypothesizes that everyone else who is considering applying for the scholarship is thinking the same thing, and many students don’t apply.  She also emphasizes the importance of being involved, so that students can demonstrate that they are active in more areas than just their education.  Kaitlyn says that being involved in Alpha Lambda Delta has personally been a great experience for her.
