Horticulture Student InternInternship Position:  Estate Garden and Landscape Maintenance
Objective

To expose the student to the many facets of professional estate gardening, grounds management, and public horticulture. To provide student with physical, hands-on experiences in horticulture, landscape, and turf.

Description

Draime Estate Gardens is a 10 acre private estate in Warren, Ohio, consisting of a collection of gardens, lawns, water features, sculptures, and hardscapes.  Specific garden areas include the Japanese, orchestral, conifer, walled, rose, vegetable, chapel, Mossy Creek, and perennial gardens.  Collections of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs, aquatics, tropical plants, and container plantings make the Draime Estate Gardens a unique horticultural oasis.

The estate gardens and grounds are available to select groups for educational, social, and cultural events.  Groups include but are not limited to students, garden clubs, art groups, and civic organizations.

Work Schedule

Interns work up to 28 hours per week.  Approximately 15 weeks from May through August.  Some weekend and evening work will be required. General daily work schedule is 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Compensation

$10.00 per hour. 

Duties

Assist staff in the maintenance of the gardens including planting, mulching, mowing, watering, pruning, propagating, weeding, deadheading, fertilizing, and pest control.  Also, work with staff in maintaining water features, pathways, structures, and other hardscape elements.  May also be opportunity for assisting staff with computerized plant records and mapping.

Prerequisites

Must be a Kent State University student in good standing; must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions; must be willing to perform physical tasks such as lifting landscape materials, pushing wheelbarrows, using gardening tools, operating power equipment.  Must be able to work independently and within a team.  Must have an energetic and enthusiastic attitude.
