Assistant Residence Hall Director Position Information

Thank you for your interest in the Assistant Residence Hall Director (ARHD) position at Kent State University! The Assistant Residence Hall Director position is a part-time (20 hours), live-in professional graduate assistantship that includes some weekend and event hours. The ARHD assists the Residence Hall Director (RHD) with enhancing student learning and academic success through the creation of a community environment that supports the overall development of students. An ARHD reports directly to their RHD, and indirectly to the Assistant Director for Residential Communities.

Generally, ARHDs are hired through the Higher Education Administration program at Kent State University. Qualified candidates are interviewed through GA Days in early March. If Residence Services is unable to fill our vacancies via the Higher Education program or there are vacancies later in the spring/summer, we will consider candidates from other graduate programs at Kent State.

Required Qualifications

An undergraduate degree

Relevant experience in student leadership

Enrolled as a full-time graduate student as defined by Kent State University with a minimum credit load of 8 credit hours per semester, and remain enrolled during the entirety of employment.

Maintain a cumulative and semester grade point average of 3.00 or above

Successful criminal background check

Position Responsibilities

Assist the Residence Hall Director in—and/or provide primary responsibility for—training, supervising, and evaluating Resident Assistant staff. Assist and advise students in matters related to academic support, crisis intervention, referral, programming, discipline, conflicts, personal development, and leadership opportunities. Additionally, the ARHD advises the hall council, including matters of budget, policy, and programming.

In consultation and collaboration with the Residence Hall Director, the ARHD has the authority to act independently and in compliance with departmental and University policy and state law in the resolution of problems, concerns and goal accomplishments. The position assists the Residence Hall Director as a contact person for student staff members as well as residence hall students in a hall or cluster of halls housing 450 – 560 students.
