University Housing Update

Hello Eastway residents,

We wanted to provide some closure on the HVAC unit review in your area. University Facilities Management (UFM) and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) completed the final checks on all rooms last Friday morning (10/14). More than 500 total rooms throughout the complex were proactively evaluated.

Since the initial few concerns were brought forth requiring additional treatment, we are happy to report that no additional mold was discovered. As a reminder of what staff did when in your room, the inspection process is below.

Original Room Inspection work included:

  • Removing the front panel of the HVAC unit
  • Wiping down inside of unit with a peroxide-based solution to kill any mold or mildew
  • Wiping down the coil and motor
  • Checking fan motor to make sure it is working properly
  • Checking the anti-fungal filter; replacing if necessary
  • Cleaning the louvers (directional vent)

Room Rechecks:
During the last two+ weeks many students requested their room to be looked at a second time for peace of mind. This was accommodated and is still an option. For any student interested you are able to make that request here - https://www.kent.edu/ufm/ready-work-request. A notice will be left on your room door once the recheck has been completed.

Furniture Blocking HVAC:
During the inspections staff noticed many instances where the louvers were blocked with room furniture (usually a wardrobe). It’s critical that the louvers perform their function and circulate air. If you’ve blocked the louver, please rearrange!
