Dublin Core Metadata CIO & OCLC Ontology Expert Visit SLIS

Thomas Baker, Ph.D., chief information officer at Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, and Jeff Young, M.L.I.S. '02, software architect and ontology expert from OCLC, visited the School of Library and Information Science on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012.

Baker and Young met with school faculty and students to discuss recent results of the The Metadata Vocabulary Junction Project, an ongoing research project on linked data funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and led by SLIS Professor Marcia Zeng, Ph.D., and Assistant ProfessorKaren Gracy, Ph.D, with assistance from Laurence Skirvin, M.L.I.S. '11, and other graduate students.

Baker and Young also provided advice to a LOD-LAM Challenge project that two students (Sammy Davidson and Jeff Mixter) have designed. In a working lunch, SLIS faculty members Yin Zhang, Ph.D., Athena Salaba, Ph.D., and Cathy Smith, Ph.D., who are researching or teaching in digital libraries and information science areas, shared their recent research findings with Baker, which generated enthusiastic discussions.
