Ph.D. in Communication & Information

The School of Information is one of four schools that make up the interdisciplinary doctorate in communication and information (along with the Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication, Communication Studies, Digital Sciences, and Visual Communication Design), awarded by the College of Communication and Information (CCI).

The curriculum in this program begins with core, theory, and methods courses in communication and information, and then becomes more specialized to fit each student’s research interests and career goals.

The Doctor of Philosophy program is research-oriented and seeks to develop doctoral scholars' ability to generate knowledge by conducting and publishing research in their areas of expertise. Although there are several library and information science-related areas of study within the Ph.D., each student will have a unique program of study, based on his/her master’s degree background and research interests. Students will have the opportunity to create their own combination of courses from across the college, drawing on the strengths of all CCI faculty and schools. Each student’s program of study will be reviewed by the Doctoral Studies Committee.
