2018 Kent State Research Colloquia

2018 Kent State Research Colloquia LogoThe 2018 Kent State Research Colloquia is a series of weekly workshops that will focus on research technologies, including state-of-the-art high performance and research computing (HPC), as well as grant resources, data management, and compliance requirements.

The workshop series is presented by Research and Sponsored Programs (RASP), Information Services (IS), and University Libraries (UL), and will be held each Friday morning from February 23 through April 6, 2018 in Room 215 of the Business Administration Building on the Kent Campus.

The workshop series provides a forum for researchers and academia to discuss with research technology representatives the technologies required for research computing at Kent State University. Participants will have the opportunity to engage HPC vendors, review technology demonstrations, and discuss various experiments and best practices.

Some of the example areas include but are not limited to:

  • Educational research
  • Genome processing
  • Modeling and simulation
  • Monte Carlo simulations
  • Transcoding and encoding
  • Computational chemistry

Visit the Research Colloquia Registration Website for detailed schedule and registration information.

Registrants will receive handouts, continental breakfast, and lunch.

Workshop Schedule

Feb 23: High Performance and Research Computing

Cisco LogoPresented by Cisco

9 a.m. – noon

Cisco provides the tools and technology to support research in the compute and network space. Learn about Cisco UCS Servers and how their concept of unified (or fabric) computing, also called converged computing: both storage and network data travel down the same physical paths. Cisco will also review some of its latest networking technology.

See options for your compute, storage, and networking needs for your next or current grant opportunities. Learn about Cisco UCS platform, optimizing performance, monitoring, upgrades, reduce down time, fast processing, large storage, reducing costs, and more.

Cisco will also share some of its grant opportunities and talk about the process. Collaborate with your peers and folks from the Division of Information Services.

Mar 23: High Performance and Research Computing

Amazon Web Services LogoPresented by Amazon Web Services (AWS)

9 a.m. – noon

Universities are using cloud computing to enhance the student experience, improve outcomes, reduce costs, and accelerate time to research. Join us at this free event to learn how the AWS Cloud addresses these requirements of Higher Education.

Come learn about how AWS provides the tools and technology to support research including HPC, genomics, big data, and many others. Learn how the cloud provides unprecedented capacity and time to delivery, while optimizing costs by only using what you need, when you need it. You’ll also learn about grants, credits and other funding opportunities available to you for your research projects.

Why attend?
Learn about best practices for deploying applications on AWS, optimising performance, monitoring cloud resources, driving efficiencies, reducing costs, and more. Whether it's big data, high performance computing (HPC), machine learning, or analysing live data, you will also have opportunities to meet AWS experts to have your technical and security questions answered.

Agenda

  • Introductions
  • Review the basics of Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Deep Dive on the Foundational Services of compute, storage, and databases
  • Research Computing patterns on AWS
  • Q&A and Next Steps
