Got Phished

You were redirected to this page because your computer navigated to a link that Kent State believes to be malicious. One of the most common ways these links are received is through phishing email.

What is phishing?

Phishing scams utilize email that appears to originate from a trusted source to trick a user into entering personal information, like usernames, passwords, or social security numbers. Attackers can use this information to access your accounts, gather additional private information about you, apply for credit, or make purchases on your behalf.

Detect Phishing Emails

  • Verify that the link matches your intended destination
  • Be cautious if an email attempts to create a sense of urgency
  • Be cautious of email messages that appear to be from a Kent State office, but come from a non Kent State email address
  • Watch for misspellings and grammar mistakes
  • Watch for generic greetings and signatures like "Dear User" and "Sincerely, IT Helpdesk"

Detect phishing websites

  • Check for slight misspellings in the URL and company name. For example, paypa1.com instead of paypal.com
  • Verify that you are on a kent.edu website. Just because the word "Kent" is in the URL does not mean that it is a legitimate website for the university. For example, kent.weebly.com is not a valid Kent State website

Remember that Kent state does not:

  • Delete active @kent.edu accounts
