Magda El-Sherbini Receives Margaret Mann Citation

SLIS adjunct instructor Magda El-Sherbini received the 2015 Margaret Mann Citation at the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Awards Ceremony on June 27, 2015, at the American Library Association annual conference in San Francisco.

The award recognizes outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification and includes a $2,000 scholarship, which El-Sherbini chose to split between two library schools: the Catholic University of America’s Department of Library and Information Science and Kent State SLIS.

SLIS Professor Yin Zhang, Ph.D., attended the ceremony at which El-Sherbini was honored. In an email message, she told El-Sherbini, "Thank you so much for your generosity and for choosing Kent State School of Library and Information Science to receive the scholarship. We are so fortunate to have you on the faculty. Our students have benefited greatly from your teaching and mentoring, and now this scholarship! We are really proud of you."

SLIS Associate Professor and Associate Director Athena Salaba, Ph.D., added, "What a great achievement and recognition of your dedication to the field and future cataloging professionals."

In 2014 El-Sherbini received the Outstanding Publication Award from ALCTS for her book RDA: Strategies for Implementation. That award is given annually to honor an author or authors of the year’s most outstanding monograph, article, or original paper in the field of technical services. El-Sherbini has served as chair of several ALCTS committees, as a member of the ALA RDA Advisory Board and as the Vice Chair/Chair Elect of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's Policy Committee. She has published and presented in the areas of cataloging and technical services management.
