SLIS at Kent State to Honor Alums at Annual Event

The School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University will host its annual Alumni and Friends Honors and Awards Program on Tuesday, Oct. 23, beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m. The event will be held at OCLC in the Kilgour Building, 6565 Kilgour Place, in Dublin, Ohio. 

Guest speaker for this year is alumna Sue Polanka (pictured, right), head of Reference & Instruction at Wright State University Libraries. Polanka was honored recently as one of the 2011Library Journal "Movers & Shakers" and is editor of the series “No Shelf Required.”

Honorees at this year’s event include the following:

LIS Alumnus of the Year: For a graduate who has made a significant contribution to the profession
Jeff Young, M.L.S. ‘02
OCLC Research – Software Architect
 
IAKM Alumnus of the Year: For a graduate who has made a significant contribution to the profession
Paige Lucas-Stannard, M.L.I.S. ’04, M.S. IAKM ‘05

Friend of the Year: In recognition of a significant contribution to the school
Beverly Cain, M.L.S. ‘86
State Librarian of Ohio

August Alpers Award: For a graduate who contributed the most to the school as a student while maintaining a good grade point average
Elizabeth Owens, M.L.I.S. ‘11

Beta Phi Mu Student Achievement Award: For a graduate who, as a student, demonstrated the emblematic qualities of Beta Phi Mu: scholarship,  leadership, and service
Shelly Miller, M.L.I.S. ‘11

Dan Machlachlan School Library Media Award: For a graduate who has exhibited creativity, leadership, and dedication to the K-12 audience
Karyn Lewis, M.L.I.S. ‘11

H.F. Group Preservation Award: For a graduate who, as a student, demonstrated outstanding scholarship and an interest in the area of library preservation

Thomas J. Froehlich Award (given for the first time this year): For an outstanding student in the program

The Thomas J. Froehlich Award was established last year as part of the 10th anniversary of the IAKM program, in honor of IAKM founder and former program director Thomas J. Froehlich, Ph.D. It will be awarded for the first time this year.

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State University has the only American Library Association-accredited Master of Library and Information Science degree program in Ohio, offering courses in Kent, Columbus (State Library of Ohio) and through a fully online option. SLIS also offers a Master of Science in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management and participates in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in the College of Communication and Information. The school is recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s top 20 LIS graduate programs, with a youth librarianship program that is ranked 13th. It is one of the largest library schools in the country, with more than 650 students enrolled.
