SLIS Professor Marcia Lei Zeng, Ph.D., was one of three faculty members honored by Kent State University for Outstanding Research and Scholarship in 2014. Competition for this honor is strong; Zeng is the first SLIS faculty member to receive the honor, as well as the first in the College of Communication and Information.
According to the university's news release about the award: "Zeng is internationally recognized for her research on metadata and knowledge organization, and she is an expert on digital libraries. She has written five books, including an influential book on metadata that she co-authored, and more than 80 articles on information management. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and others. "Zeng collaborates with researchers internationally, including the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Wide Web Consortium, and the Getty Research Institute, and she has represented the United States in international standardization efforts. She helped secure funding to rebuild the Beichuan Library and Archive after the deadly earthquake in China in 2008."
Zeng is a professor of library and information science at Kent State University. She holds a Ph.D. from the School of Information Sciences at University of Pittsburgh (USA) and M.A. from Wuhan University (China). Her major research interests include knowledge organization systems (taxonomy, thesaurus, ontology, etc), Linked Data, metadata and markup languages, database quality control, multilingual and multi-culture information processing, and digital libraries for cultural objects. Her scholarly publications consist of more than 80 papers and five books, as well as about 200 national and international conference presentations, invited lectures and keynote speeches. She was the P.I. and Co-P.I. of two National Science Foundation's (NSF) National Science Digital Library (NSDL) projects. She currently is the P.I. of an IMLS funded Linked Data project. In 2014 Zeng was elected inaugural chair of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) Advisory Board.
