April 2014: Heartbleed Bug Results in Confirmed Data Loss

Last week a serious vulnerability in software used by thousands of websites was publicized. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Canada’s tax agency, was one of the organizations reporting data loss from hackers. Personal information from approximately 900 taxpayers was stolen.

Most major websites have fixed the bug, but have asked users to update passwords as a precaution since attackers could have exploited the bug before it was publicly known.

Experts are calling this one of the most significant security issues in years, and users are reminded of the importance of using secure passwords and updating them often.
