March 2015: Social Networking Sites Pose a Security Risk
Social Networking sites are a common place for scammers to target people. Ads and apps that claim to give you the ability to see who has been viewing your profile are often illegitimate. Sometimes they are simply companies trying to learn more information for marketing purposes, but sometimes they may go as far as trying to gain financial information from you, such as credit card information. These ads and apps may also install malware on your computer.
Some companies have completely banned the use of social media sites on their network, choosing to protect themselves from some of the security vulnerabilities that come with social media sites. However, other organizations have chosen to allow social media sites because social media sites can also be a useful marketing tool. To help protect yourself, make sure you use a strong password and consider using multifactor authentication.
