JMC Earns Two Top Honors from the Society of Professional Journalists

National Mark of Excellence Awarded for Television Breaking News, News Photography

Kent State's School of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) earned two national Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Alumnus Jacob Byk, '15, was named the national winner in the general news photography category (large school division) for "The Last Shot." The photo depicts Erica Garner, daughter of Eric Garner, who was killed by a police chokehold in a scuffle with four officers on July 17, 2014. Byk shot the photo during a Staten Island protest Erica had organized. It was published in the spring 2015 issue of The Burr Magazine.

Journalism major Alexa Maslowski, '16, was named the national winner in the television breaking news reporting category for her story on the November 2015 Akron plane crash that killed nine. The story aired on TV2 and was published on KentWired.com.

Earlier this spring, JMC earned regional recognition from the Society of Professional Journalists. Read more about the honors
