Internship: Cleveland Documenters, The Portager (part of Kent State NewsLab)

"I've been an avid storyteller my whole life, and being able to contribute to sharing stories with the general public is everything I could ever hope to do and more."

Emma Andrus’s internship with Cleveland Documenters is part of an effort to train and pay hundreds of people to attend under-reported public meetings and publish the results. She has been editing notes from local government meetings and says, “I especially love that I’ve been able to learn so much more about public policy and local government. I’ve always enjoyed learning, and every time I edit, I find myself learning something new.”

In addition to working on meeting notes, Emma is also facilitating a multimedia timeline showcasing monumental people and legislation from throughout the history of environmental action in Cleveland and doing some reporting The Portagerr.

She credits her time working in Student Media — The Burr and KentWired.com — for preparing her for this experience. Classes within the journalism major like Copy Editing & News Design and Reporting also paved the way for her passions to take shape.

“My internship experience has reinforced my belief that journalism is where I belong. I've been an avid storyteller my whole life, and being able to contribute to sharing stories with the general public is everything I could ever hope to do and more,” she says.
