Madisyn Woodring, Journalism

Internship: GIE Media (trade publications)

"This is a great opportunity to make new connections and learn from people who have more experience in the industry."

Through an internship with GIE Media, an Ohio-based business-to-business media company, journalism major Madisyn Woodring has learned how the interviewing and writing skills she learned in the classroom can be useful for jobs beyond reporting hard news.

GIE operates publications in more than a dozen markets; most of Madisyn’s work has been for Pest Control Technology Magazine, for which she writes press releases for web content and feature articles for the magazine.

“Feature Writing ... was the most valuable journalism class for preparing me for my internship. The work I did for this class prepared me to write lengthy profiles with lots of details. I would say all of my journalism courses have benefited me in some way in preparing for my internship. Through these classes, I have built up my journalistic skills such as writing and interviewing, which I use almost every day.”

For her, the best part of the experience has been meeting new people in the industry. Madisyn says: “This is a great opportunity to make new connections and learn from people who have more experience in the industry. Every day, I expand my knowledge of journalism and increase my own journalistic expertise from being around my supervisor and fellow interns.”
